THE FOUNDERS ESTABLISHED THEIR HOME

Herdade Grande was purchased by Ernesto dos Santos Lança, a farmer from Aljustrel, in 1920 and has been in the Lança’s family ever since. At that time, the existing crops were vines and olives.

After the passing of Ernesto dos Santos Lança, his son Eduardo took over Herdade Grande. He carried on with the vineyard and, being passionate for Talha Wine produced it yearly

1925

THE CURRENT OWNER IS BORN

The son of Eduardo Lança, António Lança is born. As head of the family, he furthers his passion for the land, obtaining a degree in Agronomic Engineering from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia in 1970. He would naturally become the manager of Herdade Grande.

THE VITICULTURE PROJECT BEGINS

Throughout the 1980s the Herdade Grande vineyard expanded to 60 ha during a massive reorganization process. There's a commitment towards the use of a wider range of national and international varieties. The selection process is made based on their adaptability to the terroir, in a way to preserve the typical features of Alentejo wines.

THE START OF VINIFICATION

Thanks to the vision of António Lança, Herdade Grande started to bottle its own wine in 1997. The Herdade Grande brand was born, ready to sell 350'000 to 400'000 bottles of wine. From those, 30% were White and 70% Red.

THE START OF OLIVE OIL COMMERCIALIZATION

From 2008 onwards, the olive grove was harnessed for olive oil production with the Herdade Grande brand. HG Olive Oil is made from the finest olives. It's smooth, with low acidity, while preserving the genuine aromas and flavours that are unique to the Cobrançosa and Galega varieties.

THE 4TH GENERATION OF THE LANÇA FAMILY RISES

Since 2011, the fourth generation of the Lança family gets officially involved in the company. Mariana Lança, licensed in ISA in agricultural engineering with a master's degree in viticulture/oenology, accepts her fathers' challenge of taking over the management of the estate, namely the areas of marketing, commercial and their great passion: winemaking.
